Game Preview

The Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees meet today for the series finale of their four-game set at the Bronx. The Twins are trailing the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central standings as the two teams have gone back and forth for the division lead over the last month. The Yankees remain atop the AL East but have watched their 15.5 game lead dwindle over the last month as they get ready for second-place Tampa Bay this weekend.

The Yankees lineup, save for MVP-candidate Aaron Judge, has struggled heavily since the all-star break. In yesterday’s doubleheader, the Yankees offense got the job done in the opener with a 5-4 win. Judge hit his 55th home run and rookie Oswaldo Cabrera singled home the game-winner in the 12th to break a personal 0-25 skid. In game two, starter Gerrit Cole was dominant in striking out 14 Twins in just 6.2 innings to lead the Yankees to a crucial doubleheader sweep.

The Minnesota Twins spent the better part of the first three months atop the AL Central Division and have battled back and forth with the Guardians since that time. In game one of yesterday’s doubleheader, the Twins fell 5-4 in 12-innings despite a very strong start from rookie starting pitcher Louis Varland. In game two, the Twins bats were silenced by Yankees pitching and a fourth-inning Yankees’ grand slam sealed their fate as New York completed the doubleheader sweep.

Sonny Gray, after being on the injured list, returns to the Twins rotation with his playoff experience and toughness. In his last five starts, the former Yankee has gone 1-1 with a 2.81 ERA. He has allowed 21 hits in 25.2 innings pitched while striking out 9.5 batters per nine innings. New York replies back with Nestor Cortes, who is making his 24th start of the season. The lefty holds a 9-4 record with a 2.68 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP over 131 innings pitched while striking out 133.
