Game Preview

Today we have the final encounter of the three-game series between the New York Mets and the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park. While this matchup might be extremely one-sided, the outcome of yesterday’s game makes this series a bit more exciting to watch. Against all the expectations, Cincinnati picked up a very much needed win over New York, though it was a 1-run victory. Even if the Reds have won 2 out of their last 3, we still can’t forget just how atrocious they started this season, winning only 3 games throughout the entirety of April.

New York started the season in the complete opposite way of the Reds, they got off to a really good start and took hold of the National League East lead quickly. But more recently, they’ve started to let a few other teams get close to them in the NL East standings, primarily the Atlanta Braves who are just a couple of games away from them. Today they are going up against Graham Ashcraft, and while he’s been looking good for the most part of the season, his last outing was questionable. The Mets’ offense is nothing to scoff at, and Ashcraft’s consistency might end up being Cincinnati’s demise today.

While yesterday’s game ended up in a Reds victory, today’s pitching matchup is a clear indicator that the Mets are about to bounce back into the series. The Mets will be sending out David Peterson, who has yet to face Cincinnati as a starter, but his 5-1 record, 3.24 ERA and 1.20 WHIP should give them the edge in the pitching matchup. His strikeout numbers are at an all-time high, and the Reds are getting struck out a good amount too, ranking 18th in the majors with just over 8 per game, and this number has been much higher in their recent games, which might raise some concerns for them.
