Two of the most solid teams in the National League this season prepare for what truly promises to be one of the best series of the week in MLB. The Mets, who are sending star ace Max Scherzer, who already has three wins with zero losses this season thus far as starter will be visiting the St. Louis Cardinals who will be sending Miles Mikolas, who at 1-0 for the season will be on the lookout to not only score a very important and uplifting win against who many fans argue is the best all-around squad in the NL, the New York Mets.
There were times before, but not so long ago either, where the New York Mets would always be considered more of a running joke in the league, rather than an actual, serious, title contending team. Well, the joke now is on everyone who wasn’t paying enough attention to what New York has been doing as of lately.
Today, as star pitcher, and one of the best signings in recent times for the Mets, Max Scherzer gears up to face a strong Cardinals team, the Mets have one of the most complete offensive schemes in the league and an absolute unit of a pitching staff, allowing them to rightfully be considered one of the top contenders for the NL title this season.
If you look at the batting list with guys like Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso and Starling Marte then you know the Cardinals will have to bring their A-game both pitching and on defense to stop this offense. And, when you have a guy like Scherzer showing everyone why he is one of the best right handers in baseball for the past few years, then the panorama looks rather bright for the Mets.
But, by now way or reason possible should anybody rule out the St. Louis Cardinals here. As leaders of the NL Central, with as many losses as the Mets, the Cardinals have been doing pretty good for themselves, including winning four of their last six games. Nolan Arenado has truly taken over to become the Cardinals main star not only on the field defensively but also at bat with 5 HRs already and a .364 batting average.
Arenado is the kind of player you can build a team around and St. Louis has benefited greatly from bringing him on, which is why the Mets should really be looking at how to keep the Cards 3rd baseman in check if they wish to win. If Arenado gets hot though, and pitcher Miles Mikolas brings the heat, expect great things from the Cardinals today.
