Today the New York Yankees and the New York Mets wrap up their short Subway Series at Citi Field. During the first game of the set, the Yankees started up with a good 2-0 lead but couldn’t keep up against their counterparts as the Mets made their way back into the game, closing it out with a 6-3 score.
Even though they had a great start and are leading the major leagues, the Yankees are starting to slow down a bit. They are 2-4 after the All-Star break, and after Tuesday’s setback, the Yankees are now under 10-11 in July.
On the other hand, the Mets had been struggling with their offense until their last few games. From July 10-23, New York clocked a mere .609 OPS. In their Sunday and Thursday wins, they banged out 22 hits while posting a .937 OPS.
The pitching matchup is going to be an interesting one to watch. Max Scherzer will be opening things up for the New York Mets, making this his 13th start of the season. After a 7-week stint in the IL, Scherzer has managed to give the Mets the push they needed. The 38-year-old is carrying a 6-2 record with a 2.28 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP over 75 innings pitched while striking out 98.
The New York Yankees answer back with Domingo German, who is making his 2nd start of the season. German just came off the IL to make his first start of the season against the Astros last week in the second half opening doubleheader, and it didn’t go that great for him. He was touched for six hits and five runs including two home runs in just three innings of work vs. the Astros.
