Game Preview

Yesterday, the Philadelphia Phillies took over their first game against the Atlanta Braves in their 4-game series, today the Braves will try to bounce back and secure the second game of the series. Zack Wheeler was the one that picked up the win for the Phillies after pitching for 6 innings and only giving away 2 runs to the Braves, while J.T. Realmuto went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI that gave them the lead. On the other hand, it was a tough game for Tucker Davidson, who took the loss for the Braves after pitching for 2 innings but managed to give away 5 runs and 4 hits to the Phillies.

Trying to turn things around, Max Fried will be the starting pitcher for the Atlanta Braves today. Fried holds a 4-2 score and this would be his 9th start of the season. He carries a 3.31 ERA, a 1.041 WHIP and 8.6 strikeouts/9 IP, with a batting average against him of .239. Last week we saw him pitch throughout 6 innings against the Milwaukee Brewers, where he gave away 3 earned runs over 7 hits. Fried will try his luck against one of the strongest offenses in the league, the Phillies’ offense ranks fourth in MLB with a .249 batting average this season and have hit 48 home runs so far.

On the other side, The Braves have hit 52 homers this season, which ranks fifth in the league, which is a bit higher than the Phillies, but they are way lower in the MLB batting average rankings, sitting at 25th with a .225 team batting average. Kyle Gibson will be the one going up against the Braves’ offense. Gibson carries a 3.98 ERA and a 1.233 WHIP over 43 innings pitched, and we last saw him throw for 5⅔ innings against the San Diego Padres, where he allowed 2 earned runs while giving up 8 hits. If the Atlanta Braves want to turn things around, they will have to take advantage of the fact that their pitching matchup looks to be in their favor.
