Tuesday’s Braves 7-6 victory over the Phillies went the distance. When Nick Castellanos hit a single home run to deep right field in the bottom of the second inning, the Phillies finally got on the board.
In the fourth inning, though, the Braves tied the game when Matt Olson hit a solo home run to right field. After waiting an inning, the Braves scored again on a two-run home drive by Ronald Acuna Jr. to left-center field, giving Atlanta a 3-1 lead. The Braves were leading 5-1 when Marcell Ozuna hit a three-run homer.
However, the Phillies kept playing. When Trea Turner hit a single to center field in the eighth inning, though, the tide began to turn. Bryce Harper’s home run to deep right-center field in the eighth inning trimmed the Phillies’ deficit to 6-3. Then, Bryson Scott cut the score to 6-5 with a home run to center field.
Trea Turner hit a home run to left-center field that knotted the score in the ninth inning. Finally, in the bottom of the 10th, the Braves prevailed on Eddie Rosario’s single to right-center field.
Today, Spencer Strider will take the mound for the Braves. He has a 16-5 record and a 3.83 ERA. His last start was a disappointment, as he only lasted 2 2/3 innings and surrendered six earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks. In two starts against the Phillies this year, Strider has struck out 18 and allowed just three runs over twelve innings.
For the Phillies, the starting pitcher is Christopher Sanchez, who is 2-3 with a 3.26 ERA. In his most recent start, Sanchez blanked the Miami Marlins over the course of five innings. If Sanchez can go at least five innings while limiting damage, the Phillies will have a chance to win. Then, they need to get on the board first against Strider to prevent him from settling into his rhythm.
