The Cardinals travel to Florida for a four-game series against the Miami Marlins beginning Monday July 3rd at Marlins Park. The Cardinals are fresh off a win against the New York Yankees while St. Louis lost in their final matchup versus the Atlanta Braves.
Though the Cardinals remain struggling for playoff contention, they’ve shown improvement recently. Over their last eight games they are 4-4 with an NL Central record of 35-48; fourth place the Chicago Cubs currently hold a 38-44 record in divisional play.
With some key additions over the offseason, the Cardinals seem much improved from where they started this season. Unfortunately, due to a lack of a marquee player on their roster, they often go unnoticed in the National League (NL). With that in mind, they hope that strong finishes may propel them into contention; to achieve that goal they must keep playing well.
Miles Mikolas will pitch for the Cardinals. Mikolas has made 17 starts and has a 4.44 ERA and 1.38 WHIP. Even though his statistics are higher than his career averages, he sometimes can start well for St. Louis.
Despite having a wild card slot and a losing streak of 3 consecutive games, the Marlins are in the 2nd spot in the NL East. Miami’s latest match against the Atlanta Braves ended in a 6-3 loss, significantly diminishing the team’s chances of winning the division.
Although Miami did manage two runs in the third inning, their offense simply wasn’t enough as they lost to their division rival. Sandy Alcantara only lasted five innings as starting pitcher before giving up 4 earned runs while striking out 6 batters and walking 2 in this outing.
