Tonight is the first of three games between the Padres and the playoff-bound Phillies. The Phillies have had a better season than the dismal Friars, but San Diego is a dangerous opponent at home.
Tonight’s game is the opening contest in a three-game series between the Philadelphia Phillies and the San Diego Padres, and it’ll be played at PETCO Park in San Diego. The Phillies will send out right-hander Taijuan Walker, while the Padres will counter with veteran southpaw Rich Hill. Philadelphia leads the season series against San Diego 3-1 and needs only one more win to claim the crown.
The Padres are winless in Rich Hill’s five outings since the team acquired him from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Hill is a left-handed pitcher who has struggled at times this season. His strikeout totals rise and fall, but in his most recent start against the Phillies he struck out a career-high seven batters, and he has done it seven other times this year.
When facing left-handed pitchers, the Phillies are second-worst in strikeout rate. Brewers lefty Wade Miley struck out four and pitched a no-hitter through the first six innings yesterday, but the Phillies scored twice in the seventh and eighth before holding on for a 4-2 victory. This afternoon against Hill, the Phillies will have the same kind of trouble they did against Miley.
The Padres have had some great players, but as a team they are just 65-73. San Diego, on the other hand, has a winning record at PETCO Park.
Philadelphia has benefited from Taijuan Walker, who performs best at Citizens Bank Park. While he has thrown well of late, his xFIP is nearly 5.00 and the Padres offense has a 109 wRC+ and a 6-4 record over their previous 10 games. He has struck out seven, walked two, and allowed 1.25 home runs over 65 away innings pitched.
