Opening a series on the field out west will be two American League clubs in polar different positions with respect to the playoff picture. On Monday afternoon, the Toronto Blue Jays will face battle against the Oakland Athletics for the first of a three-game series. On Sunday afternoon, Toronto and Colorado played the series finale of their three-game set.
On Saturday night, the Blue Jays lost game three of a three-game set by a score of 8-7. On Sunday afternoon, Oakland hosted Los Angeles and had a chance to win the series 3-0. On Saturday, the A’s took game three of the series by a score of 2-1. The Blue Jays swept the first-ever regular-season meeting between the teams, which took place in Toronto from June 23-25.
The Rockies won Game 3 of their road series against Toronto on Saturday night, ending Toronto’s two-game winning streak. The loss brought the Blue Jays’ overall record to 74-62, good for third place in the American League East, 10.5 games back of the division-leading Orioles. In the race for the second American League wild card spot, they trailed the Rangers by 1.5 games.
For the Blue Jays, Jose Berrios will be making his 28th start of the year. In 158 innings of action this season, he has a 9-10 record, 3.70 ERA, 1.222 WHIP, 46 walks, and 146 strikeouts. Berrios’s previous start was on the road Tuesday against the Nationals, and he ended up with a loss.
The Athletics have won two in a row, and their victory over the Angels on Sunday gives them a chance at a rare three-game sweep. As of Sunday, the A’s had a season record of 41-95 and were in last place in the American League West, 36.5 games behind the division-leading Seattle Mariners. They are no longer in the running for a playoff spot.
For Oakland, Ken Waldichuk will be making his 20th start of the season on the mound in his 31st appearance. His season stats include a 2-7 record, 1 save, 5.92 ERA, 1.667 WHIP, 64 walks, and 114 strikeouts over 114 innings of work. In his most recent start, which occurred on the road against the Mariners on Tuesday night, Waldichuk was not involved in the decision.
