Picks & Predictions: Braves vs Guardians 7/03/2023

Game Preview

The Atlanta Braves have won their last eight games in a row and look to extend that streak when they face Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio on Monday, July 3rd.

This year, the Braves’ offense is looking strong. In terms of runs, hits, home runs, RBIs, walks, batting average, OBP, SLG, and OPS, they rank among the best 10 in the majors. Matt Olson ranks top in the squad in home runs and RBIs. Ronald Acuna is the team leader in runs, hits, and stolen bases. In the Major Leagues, Acuna ranks in the top 5 for runs, hits, and stolen bases.

The explosive right-hander will start the first match for the Braves in an effort to establish the mood. With a 6-1 record and a 2.44 ERA, Elder enters this game among the greatest pitchers in the majors. He hasn’t given up more than 2 runs in any of his most recent 3 outings, going a combined 19 innings while giving up just 3 runs.

On the other hand, the Guardians have struggled offensively this season and rank in the bottom 10 for runs, homers, OBP, slugging percentage and RBIs. Jose Ramirez remains one of the better hitters in baseball, yet other members of their roster aren’t producing as they should.

The Guardians hope rookie right-hander Gavin Williams can turn around their fortunes. Williams, considered one of the top prospects in the league, has posted a 2.84 ERA through two starts this season. He made his first start against the Kansas City Royals without allowing any earned runs; so hopefully his winning streak can continue against Atlanta’s challenging offense.

The Braves’ offense, which ranks among the strongest in the MLB, has been on fire recently. They will face Gavin Williams, a relatively young pitcher, and they will be very challenging for the novice pitcher. Williams made his prior start versus the Kansas City Royals. Despite being quite impressive, Williams’ chances of defeating Atlanta’s offense are not quite as good. For Atlanta, Bryce Elder has performed admirably away from home. Elder has a 1.43 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and he hasn’t given up a homer in 6 away starts so far this year.
