Today, Gerrit Cole was the pitcher. His record is at 12 wins and 4 losses, and his earned run average is 2.95. That ranks as the fourth best ERA among major league pitchers this season. The Tigers were his opponent the last time out. He allowed just two runs, both on solo home runs, across six innings of work. His recent struggles with home runs can be attributed to this.
Today, Alex Faedo will take the mound for the Tigers. Faedo has a 4.89 ERA and a 2-5 record this season. The Tigers won 10-0 on Saturday thanks in part to his relief performance. In his last four outings, he has been consistently effective. In those four starts, he allowed just 10 runs (8 earned) across 20.1 innings pitched.
The Yankees’ pitching staff is stronger than the opposition’s. After a rough start to August, Cole is once again operating at peak performance. However, he did allow some contact the last time he faced the Tigers. Fortunately, most of their attempts resulted in hard outs rather than hits. However, in this case, he still needs to correct that. Alex Faedo has been effective in his last four outings at the helm, albeit he seldom lasts the whole nine innings.
