After yesterday’s loss to the Pirates, the Brewers’ advantage in the NL Central shrank. Despite losing one of their best hitters to injury, the Brewers took the early lead in the game. In the second inning, they took a two-run lead after two sacrifice flies. Jack Suwinski hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth, bringing in Andrew McCutchen and tying the game.
The Pirates would go on to win 4-2 thanks to a home run by Ke’Bryan Hayes and an RBI double by Andrew McCutchen in the fifth inning. The Brewers improved to 76–61 on the season. In the NL Central, they are 2.5 games ahead of the Cubs and 5.5 games ahead of the Reds.
Yesterday was the second straight game in which the Brewers’ offense faltered. It was only two runs, and they have scored two or fewer in each of their last four defeats. The Brewers are currently ranked 19th in the majors in runs scored, 27th in batting average, 21st in on-base percentage, and 28th in slugging percentage.
Today, Brandon Woodruff will take the mound for the Brewers. With a 2.70 ERA, he is 3-1 on the season. Only seven times has he started a game this year, and five of those were in the month of August. In 28.2 innings of work, Woodruff allowed 11 runs, good for a 3.45 ERA.
Today, Andre Jackson will make his fourth career start on the mound. On the year, he has a record of 1-1 and an earned run average of 4.46. Since joining the Pirates from the Dodgers, he has been consistently reliable. He’s made six total appearances, three in relief and three as a starter. He has now thrown 24.4 innings while allowing only eight runs.
There is not a significant advantage in today’s pitching matchup. Andre Jackson has outperformed Brandon Woodruff during the past month, but their track records are too little to suggest that this is a trend. Five of the six games he’s played in, the Pirates have lost.
