The Twins were dominant in the first game of the series. In only three innings, they were able to get rid of Lucas Giolitio. Off of him, they scored nine runs on seven hits and three walks. The Twins got things going in the first inning thanks to a solo home run by Jorge Polaco. In the second, he’d walk with the bases full to get another run before Royce In the bottom of the second, Lewis hit a grand slam to put the Twins ahead by six runs.
Starting with a Carlos Correa home run in the third inning, the Twins would go on to score three more runs in the inning, increasing their advantage to 9-0. Twenty total runs were scored, with Lewis accounting for six RBI and Kyle Farmer and Matt Wallner each contributing three.
With the victory, the Twins improved to 72-66 and now lead the Guardians by three games in the AL Central. The Guardians’ record fell to 66-72; they’ll need to win the rest of the series to be competitive.
The Twins are going to start Sonny Gray. His ERA this season is 2.92, and he is 7-6 overall. This ERA ranks third in the major leagues. In August, he really excelled. He started six times and threw 39.2 innings while allowing 10 runs (9 earned).
A 2.04 ERA is a very respectable mark. But the Twins did not help him out much with the bats. Due to a lack of run support, he lost twice and the Twins lost three times. His last start, the Twins lost despite his going the distance and allowing no runs.
Today, Tanner Bibee will take the mound for the Guardians. He has a 3.03 ERA and 10 wins this season. Last time out, he threw five strong innings while allowing two runs and picking up a no-decision.
The Twins were no different, and he struck out eight of them while walking three. Bibee has had trouble with walks on occasion. Earlier in August, he scored four times in a game, and once in July.
