The Yankees have a winning record after their recent series against the Red Sox, when they won three of four games and split yesterday’s doubleheader. The series featured strong showings from both batters and pitchers. The Yankees’ complaining helped limit the Red Sox to only three runs in the first two games of the series.
However, they allowed ten runs across yesterday’s doubleheader. The at-bat occurred in yesterday’s second game’s second inning. In order to force a run, DJ LeMahieu singled through the infield.
The Yankees were already ahead, 4-2, when Aaron Judge hit a grand slam to center field, increasing their lead to 5–2. Another run-scoring hit by LeMahieu and a two-run homer by Oswald Peraza in the ninth inning sealed the deal. The Yankees are now 74-73 for the year. They are now 16.5 games out of first place in the division and 7.5 games out of the last Wild Card slot.
Today, Gerrit Cole will make his debut as a Yankee. He has a 13-4 record and a 2.79 ERA so far this season. Among major league pitchers that qualify, that ERA is third best. Cole has been outstanding in both of his September starts. Cole has allowed only one run in thirteen innings of work this month.
The Pirates, meanwhile, have swept the Nationals. Mitch Keller pitched brilliantly in yesterday’s 2-0 victory over the Nationals. He threw eight scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and a walk.
The Pirates’ current record of 69-78 means that they are no longer in the hunt for the postseason but are also not in danger of being eliminated. When compared to the Giants, the Reds, and the Diamondbacks, the Pirates have a 6.5 game deficit for the final Wild Card spot.
Today, Johan Oviedo will take the mound for the Pirates. He has a 4.34 ERA and is 8-14 on the year. His two starts this month have not gone well. Oviedo has allowed eight runs, six of them earned, in just 7.1 innings of work. A 7.36 ERA is a rather bad number.
