Two clubs looking to get out of ruts will clash when the San Diego Padres take on the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Padres have lost four in a row, bringing their record to 55-60 and dropping them to fourth place in the National League West Division. The Diamondbacks are now below .500 with a record of 57-58 after losing their last eight games in a row.
The Padres are trying to salvage a forgettable season by making a run at the wild card. One of the season’s bright lights has been Blake Snell, who has struck out 164 batters in 124 innings of work and surrendered only 38 runs. Snell’s opponents aren’t getting many hits and scoring few runs this year because of his low ERA prediction (3.86) and high strikeout percentage (31.3).
Although Snell has pitched well, the offense has been stagnant of late, scoring only 10.57 runs per game over the last four games. The remainder of the lineup hasn’t been as productive as Juan Soto and Ha-Seong Kim, who, respectively, are slashing .270/.413/.513 with 24 home runs and 205 total bases, and .288/.384/.451.
The Diamondbacks’ season has gotten out of hand, but they still have a shot at making the playoffs in the National League. Ryne Nelson is one of their greatest young pitchers, but he has been terrible this year. He has given up 72 runs in 122 innings. With an expected opponent slugging percentage of .473, a barrel percentage of .11, and an earned run average of .504, it’s clear that batters are pounding the ball when they get a chance to face Ryne Nelson, resulting in plenty of extra base hits and runs scored.
The Diamondbacks’ batters have struggled as of late, scoring just 15 runs in their last eight games after averaging 4.66 per game all season. Ketel Marte is slashing .282/.358/.492 with 18 home runs and 204 total bases, and Corey Dickerson is batting .273/.353/.514, the remainder of the lineup has struggled to produce runs.
