After two agonizing one-run defeats, the mighty Philadelphia Phillies looked like they were vulnerable for a couple of days. Their reaction on Saturday evening demonstrated that they had more work to do in the playoffs. The Phillies defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-1 to secure a 3-2 lead in the National League Championship Series. In the 6th inning, Kyle Schwarber smacked another home run after getting a hanging breaking ball at the highest part of the zone of strikeouts. This is something he accomplishes exceptionally well in the playoffs. Zack Wheeler pitched 7 scoreless innings, Schwarber, Bryce Harper, and J.T. Realmulto each hit a home run, and the Phillies outhit the Diamondbacks 6-1.
As Arizona’s offense failed to respond by registering any runs for themselves, DBacks fans struggled to maintain their enthusiasm and excitement. It wasn’t until Alek Thomas’ home run in the 7th inning that the DBacks were awarded their sole point for the game.
A pitching rematch from Game 2 will take place in Game 6. MerrillKelly was given the loss in that game after pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing 4 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks. Those 3 hits were all homers. Aaron Nola, on the other hand, made a strong opening. In 6 innings of play, he kept the Diamondbacks without a run on 3 hits and no walks. Out of the 22 hitters he faced, he struck out 7 of them.
