The American League West’s Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels will play four games this weekend in Anaheim. The Mariners just won a series against the Red Sox, while the Angels dropped a pair of games in Atlanta and are now a half-game behind the Mariners in the standings.
Despite losing their closer for a second consecutive year and making no moves to improve their major league team, the Mariners are still in the race. As a result of taking two of three from Boston, the Mariners moved up to third place in the AL West Division, passing the Angels.
The Seattle Mariners’ best pitcher, Luis Castillo, will take the mound on Friday. Castillo has a 7-7 record with 12 quality starts in 22 appearances. In 131.1 innings pitched, he has a 2.88 ERA and has given up 100 hits. He strikes out 10.2 batters per nine innings and has a 1.01 walk-hit-in ratio. Castillo has gone 3-0 with a 2.37 ERA in his last three outings.
The Angels gambled everything they had at the trade deadline in an effort to make the playoffs and to convince star player Shohei Ohtani to come to Anaheim. The Angels have strengthened their roster for the final two months of the season by acquiring first baseman C.J. Cron and outfielder Randal Grichuk from the Rockies, and starting pitcher Lucas Giolito from the White Sox. After starting the series with a 4-1 win against the Braves, the Angels were swept by Atlanta.
Friday night’s game two for the Angels will be started by lefty Reid Detmers. This season, Detmers has a record of 2-8 in 19 starts, with only five quality outings. He has only given up 92 hits while pitching 101.1 innings. His K/9 is 11.3, and his WHIP is at 1.29. Detmers enters this game with a 0-2 record and an 8.36 ERA over his last three starts.
