The Boston Red Sox were defeated by the Toronto Blue Jays 16-3 in 2022 and wow, what a year can do to change things up. As they head into a vital three-game weekend series against the Red Sox at hitter-friendly Fenway Park, Toronto is 0-7 against Boston thus far this season.
After a 3-1 series defeat to the AL East-leading Baltimore Orioles at Rogers Centre, Toronto’s offense continued to struggle, putting the Red Sox two games adrift in the race for the last American League wild-card berth.
With only 10 runs scored in four games, the Blue Jays fell further behind the division-leading Orioles by a margin of 7.5 games. They have a dismal 2-8 record while facing Baltimore.
On Tuesday, the Baltimore Orioles traded for starting pitcher Jack Flaherty from the St. Louis Cardinals, and on Thursday, he helped them to a 6-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. The loss dropped Toronto’s record against AL East teams to an abysmal 8-23.
On Thursday, the Blue Jays were down 3-0 but rallied in the sixth inning when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled and the bases were loaded with one out. But the threat was neutralized when both Matt Chapman and Alejandro Kirk struck out. On Wednesday, two hit batters with the bases loaded and an error allowed the Blue Jays to win 2-1.
Wednesday’s 6-3 loss in Seattle gave the Mariners a 2-1 series lead over the Red Sox, who had a 3-0 lead after five innings. After Kutter Crawford exited after five innings, the Red Sox bullpen, which has been taxed by the injury of three starters, struggled.
For almost a month, Boston has been effectively using a three-man rotation, alternating bullpen days with a productive off-day plan. In their last 26 games, Boston has a 17 win record.
