Two very different teams wearing red will go up against each other, albeit with different ferocities. The Washington Nationals have started a rebuild, and they are now losing games while trying to nurture their young talent.
Meanwhile, with their talented youth, the Cincinnati Reds appear to be moving past their rebuilding phase and back toward postseason contention. Cincinnati swept four games at Nationals Park a month ago.
The Nationals’ offense has been consistently subpar. They averaged 12 runs per game against the Brewers. They’ve scored 4.29 runs per game on average this season. The Nationals are 22nd in the majors in slugging percentage, 5th in batting average, and 17th in on-base percentage.
The Nationals will send Patrick Corbin to the mound today. Corbin has a 5.07 ERA and 7-11 record this year. His most recent trip was more challenging than usual. He faced the Mets and pitched 5.2 innings, allowing 4 runs. And he let two people go deep, too. Six home runs were hit off of him in July, yet he made only five starts.
The Cincinnati Reds’ offense typically allows them to win despite poor pitching. They are sixth in the majors in runs scored, 13th in batting average, 11th in slugging percentage, and sixth in on-base percentage this season. Recent hot streaks for Spencer Steer and Joey Votto. Joey Votto and Spencer Steer have been on a tear recently. Last week, Steer hit three home runs and drove in seven runs.
Graham Ashcraft will be the Reds’ starting pitcher today. This season, he has gone 6-7 with a 5.31 earned run average. But he’s been on a roll as a pitcher as of late. He started five games in July and went 3-1. He had a 1.84 ERA, allowing only six runs in 29.1 innings of work.
