Game 4 of the 2023 NLCS will take place at Chase Field on Friday evening. The Arizona Diamondbacks won Game 3 on Thursday, but the Philadelphia Phillies still hold a 2-1 series lead thanks to Ketel Marte‘s walk-off single. In 70% of instances in best-of-sevens in the past, teams holding a 2-1 lead went on to prevail in the series. Game 3 became the sole playoff match to have a tied scoreboard in the 6th inning or later. Marte and the outstanding rookie right Brandon Pfaadt helped Arizona win a close game. In a best-of-seven series, a 3-0 disadvantage is as daunting as it gets. The D-backs have a bit of optimism now.
The NLCS will be the main event on Friday evening. Joe Mantilla of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Cristopher Sanchez of the Philadelphia Phillies will open the game, respectively.
This year, Sanchez has yet to make an appearance in a postseason contest. He pitched well in September, but as of right now, he hasn’t pitched in a match since September 30th. The age-old “rust vs. rest” controversy might be brought up anytime anyone remains inactive for that long. Three weeks off, though, can throw you off your game a bit.
Instead of a legitimate starter, Joe Mantiply receives the ball for Arizona. Only three of Mantiply’s starts during the course of the regular season were made. In reality, he has only started 3 games in the course of his career. In some ways, he serves as the starter for this match simply in name. This looks like it’s going to be a game when every arm that can be utilized will try to achieve 27 outs and victory. But right now, Arizona appears much more hopeless than Philadelphia.
There isn’t always an abundance of offense in matches between opposing bullpens, but there is usually a lot of pitching changes and strategy discussion.
