UFC 294 kicks off with an intense middleweight battle between Ikram Aliskerov and Warlley Alves, one of DWCS grads who came into the Octagon ready to make an immediate impact, evidenced by his first-round knockout win over Phil Hawes in May. After his win, Aliskerov remained unranked; however, the fact he now faces an experienced veteran suggests the UFC sees him as a potential future contender in this division.
Aliskerov, 30, is an adept striker and grappler, using throws and trips to control opponents before looking for submissions, hooks and crosses to secure back against cage and fighting well from both orthodox and southpaw stances to land jabs and cross combos that keep his opponents off balance.
Aliskerov suffered his only UFC loss to Khamzat Chimaev in 2019, yet still holds a 14-1 overall MMA record with 10 victories coming inside the distance. A promising middleweight prospect, Aliskerov is likely to advance quickly within the ranks with continued success.
Alves is an exciting fighter who doesn’t back away from brawling. A big middleweight with power and durability advantages, Alves has proved himself as a dangerous ground and pound attacker. While his last few outings may have been mixed results, he still has enough skills and power to come back up through the ranks and challenge for top half positions of his division.
Ikram Aliskerov is a big favorite to defeat Warlley Alves, but hasn’t looked impressive in his most recent fights. While the Dagestani middleweight does land some powerful strikes and work well from the floor, his defense leaves something to be desired.
Alves has not had much luck controlling his opponents from a top position, but he remains an effective striker who’s not afraid to engage in a slugfest and take their opponents down when necessary. His attacks can range from basic kickboxing combinations like high kick and front knee to more sophisticated techniques such as back kick with sweeping punch to keep his opponents guessing; his energy drains quite quickly though which leaves him vulnerable against skilled strikers
