Game Preview

Currently atop the American League Central, On Thursday, the Minnesota Twins and the Chicago White Sox kick off a four-game road series with nine games remaining to determine the division champion. Some of Minnesota’s players might start to relax now that the game is almost over.

While trying to stay healthy and create momentum for an October run, Minnesota only went 7-5 in the month of September. On Wednesday, the Twins battled back from a 4-0 deficit against AL playoff hopeful Tampa Bay, but the Rays won the series with a 5-4 victory thanks to a home run by Randy Arozarena in the ninth inning.

The Cubs’ 7-1 loss to the 101-loss Kansas City Royals on Wednesday was their ninth straight defeat. The season series ended with a 7-6 victory for the Royals over the Cubs. The White Sox’s season-long problems have resulted in minimal audiences down the stretch, despite the team’s division title hopes for 2023.

For the first time since 2018, when they lost 100 games, Chicago has lost 90. The White Sox need at least nine wins and nineties losses to finish under.500. Right-hander Jose Urena, called up from Triple-A Charlotte this month, will make his second start for Chicago.

On Saturday in his White Sox debut, Urena allowed one run on four hits while taking the loss in a game against the Tigers. He only had two free passes and three strikeouts. In four career appearances, three of which were starts, Urena has a 6.57 ERA versus the Twins.

With a win on Thursday, the Twins can sweep the season series against the White Sox. The Twins swept the White Sox at home from July 21-23, winning both games by a single run after the teams had split the first six meetings between them. Chicago’s 5-14 start to the second half includes a six-game losing streak that began at Minneapolis.

Twins turn to Kenta Maeda in relief. On Saturday, he allowed just two runs over five and a third innings to beat the New York Mets. When facing the White Sox, Maeda has a 2-2 record and a 5.58 ERA in six career starts. On April 10, he gave up four runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking no one in a loss to the White Sox.
