As the season closes down, the Pirates are playing solid baseball. The Pirates have won six of their last ten games and will finish fourth in the National League Central. The Pirates swept the weekend series against the Reds in Cincinnati.
The Pirates’ final schedule included three games against the Philadelphia Phillies and then a home series against the last-place Miami Marlins. While the Steel City will miss the postseason this year, 2024 promises to be a banner year.
With Keller on the field, the Pirates have a fighting chance to win. He has already made a start this season against the Phillies, despite his road pitching woes. Keller pitched brilliantly that day, and the Pirates were never more than a run down. Keller pitched 5 2/3 innings, gave up 6 hits, 2 runs, and struck out 8 in the victory.
In terms of the Wild Card, the Phillies are now in first place. If the season ended today, they would be hosting the second-place Wild Card club for the first round of the playoffs. It’s safe to say that Philadelphia will be the first Wild Card team.
They have a five-game advantage over both the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Chicago Cubs. As of right now, the Phillies have won five straight games and eight of their past 10. At home this past weekend, the Phillies swept a four-game series against the New York Mets.
This is hardly Nola’s finest season. His earned run average is high, but his walk and strikeout rates are respectable. The simple fact is that he has a lot of trouble performing on the road. Fortunately, Nola’s home record is great, and he’ll be playing here. This season, Nola’s earned run average (ERA) at Citizens Bank Ballpark is 3.44, which is 1.99 runs better than his ERA on the road.
His K/9 is higher, and his oBA is.215 as well. The Phillies finally get the Nola they envisioned when he returned home this season. Nola has a favorable matchup, especially considering he will be pitching at home.
