Colorado’s road loss to Oregon in the Pac-12 opener was a sobering reminder that one of the best tales in college football could not be playing at the same level as the conference’s best teams.
This time, they’ll be in Boulder on a Saturday afternoon to take on USC, another top-tier opponent. Caleb Williams, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, leads an unbeaten Trojans team into the game. Will Colorado, again playing as an underdog, encounter a similar buzzsaw?
Williams, Caleb We can expect more great stat lines from the reigning Heisman Trophy winner Williams because he hasn’t faced a legitimate defense yet and won’t face one against Colorado. He has thrown for 1,200 yards and 15 touchdowns, completing 74% of his throws.
Shadeur Sanders struggled against a strong Oregon defense without his top wideout Travis Hunter, completing only 69% of his passes for 159 yards. Colorado’s offensive line couldn’t stop Oregon’s pass rush, so he ran for -34 yards.
I’m concerned about the USC defense, but I have little faith in the Trojans’ pass rush, which has had little trouble getting to the quarterback against weak offensive lines. Colorado’s offensive line should be able to handle the pressure. According to Pro Football Focus, the Trojans have the third-best pass rush in the country.
Last week, Sanders took seven sacks from Oregon as the Buffaloes’ offense stalled. The Trojans’ ability to penetrate the other team’s backfield means that their defense won’t be breached on Saturday afternoon.
However, due to the early start time of 10 AM local time, it may take a while for both teams to get going offensively and for the pace to ramp up. USC may try to run up the score after seeing how Oregon handled their game against Colorado last week.
