Believe it or not, Chris Paul had more fouls (six) than points (five) in Game 4 of the Western Conference Semifinals between the Phoenix Suns and the Dallas Mavericks. On the other hand, Luka Doncic scored 26 and added 11 assists. That was enough for Dallas to win (111-101) and even the series at two games per side.
Devin Booker (35 points) returned to beast mode for the Suns, but clearly wasn’t enough. As for the Mavs, Jalen Brunson contributed 18 points, but it was the contribution of three players from the bench that ended up making the difference. Maxi Kleber, Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans scored 10+ points each.
Despite averaging 33 points per game, Doncic said the following: “Our defense won us these two games.” He’s not wrong, though. Doncic scored 45 points in Game 1 and 35 in Game 2, but Dallas still lost. Limiting Paul and Mikal Bridges to less than seven points was crucial to even the series. There’s also the fact that Phoenix committed 17 turnovers in each of the games in Dallas.
“It’s 2-2 and we worked to be in this position. I told our guys, we’ve got to have the mindset of coming back here and winning this thing,” said Phoenix’s head coach Monty Williams.
Fortunately for them, the series goes back to Footprint Center, where the Suns own a 36-10 record. As expected, they dominate the NBA odds (-6 -110). Phoenix is 4-1 against the spread in its last five games when playing as the favorite.
As for the total, it’s set at 213 points. Keep in mind that the total went over in seven of Dallas’ last nine games on the road.
Nothing has changed regarding the injury reports. Tim Hardaway Jr. remains out for the Mavericks and Dario Saric remains out for the Suns.
Game 6, at American Airlines Center, is scheduled for Thursday night.
