At FedExForum, two Western Conference teams aim to start the weekend on a positive note, hit the court. On Friday evening, the Denver Nuggets will travel to the east to play the Memphis Grizzlies. On Tuesday evening, Denver defeated the Lakers 119-107 at home to start their campaign. Memphis’ 2023–24 campaign began on Wednesday evening with a 111–104 home defeat to New Orleans.
Denver easily defeated Los Angeles 119-107 at home on Tuesday evening after receiving their title rings the night before their game against the Lakers. After the first quarter, the Nuggets led by 14 points. However, the Lakers fought back and entered the 4th quarter up seven points. Denver finally pulled away to win. Leading the charge via 29 points, 13 rebounds, with 11 assists, Nikola Jokic recorded his first triple-double of the year. Jamal Murray also finished with 21 points as well as 6 assists. 20 more points were scored by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope on 8 of 12 shots, including 2 of 3 from beyond the arc. Similarly, Michael Porter Jr. concluded with 12 points as well as 12 rebounds, and Aaron Gordon contributed 15 points. The Nuggets had a 52.7 percent field goal percentage, with 41.2 percent coming from behind the 3-point arc.
Grizzlies defeat the New Orleans Pelicans, 111-104. Memphis led 28–25 at the end of the opening quarter. However, a disastrous 2nd quarter completely changed the course of the match, resulting in the Pelicans ultimately gaining the lead. Of note, Desmond Bane scored the most, with 31 points. During his Memphis debut, Marcus Smart finished with 17 points. Xavier Tillman Sr. contributed 12 rebounds and 17 points as well. However, Jaren Jackson had a difficult game, only scoring 8 points from 2 of 9 shots, which included 5 field goal misses. The Grizzlies are hoping to bounce back and defeat the reigning champions in order to secure their first victory of the year.
