The Milwaukee Panthers (10-21) take on the Purdue Boilermakers (25-6) in an early season inter-conference bout this Tuesday. The Panthers recorded a poor 10-21 record last season, finishing ninth in the Horizon League. The Boilermakers logged a dominant 25-6 record and finished 3rd in the Big Ten.
The Milwaukee Panthers are in a complete rebuild this season. They brought in a new head coach, Bart Lundy who coached Queens DII school last year. The program lost all of its top scorers from last season including their two players who averaged over 10 PPG.
The program has struggled to generate winning seasons in the past five years and is hoping this refresh will lead to future success. The Panthers beat non-DI foe Milwaukee School of Engineering 102-46 on Monday. The Purdue Boilermakers are going to be competitive in the Big Ten again this season after losing in the third round of last year’s NCAA Tournament.It won’t be easy in a stacked conference. Two of their best three players on last year’s squad, Jaden Ivey and Trevion Williams, are off to the NBA. This leaves a void in scoring and rebounding.
The Boilermakers are ranked 25th in DI in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball ratings. Purdue was voted to finish 5th in the Big Ten preseason poll conducted by the Dispatch and the Athletic. Last season, the Boilermakers averaged a stellar 80.7 points, good for seventh. They limited foes to only 68.8 points, placing them 170th in DI.
The Milwaukee Panthers are looking for improvement under new head coach Seth Lundy. They brought in some key transfers including Keon Edwards who spent last year with Nebraska. The program expects a big year from Vin Baker Jr. who played for a few years with Boston College.
