Game Preview

Last week, the Clemson Tigers lost 31-24 in overtime to the Florida State Seminoles, despite having a short field goal attempt at the end of regulation. The team’s chances of making the College Football Playoff have diminished significantly after the loss.

The Tigers, who have lost both of their ACC games so far, will meet an undefeated Syracuse Orange team. After beating Army in Week 4, Syracuse is 4-0, but their competition has been weak. In Week 5, the Orange are underdogs at home.

A major problem plagues Clemson’s offense, and it’s not just the quarterback. Cade Klubnik is only completing 66.2% of his passes and is only averaging 6.7 yards per attempt. That means the threat of going up in the air is minimal, and the emphasis is on the ground game instead. The Tigers need to trust Klubnik with downfield passes if they want to make a playoff push after a 2-2 start.

Syracuse was the team that pounded the rock against Army last week. Twenty carries for 104 yards and a touchdown for LeQuint Allen. He now ranks second on the Orange in rushing yards behind only quarterback Garrett Shrader with 311 yards on 61 runs this season.

So far in the season, Syracuse hasn’t faced the toughest competition. The Boilermakers were the most challenging opponent this team has faced, yet Purdue still won, 35-20. However, the Orange’s defensive performance is remarkable despite this.

When it comes to yards allowed per play, Syracuse is second best at just 4.0. It allows 9.1 yards per carry and 16.1 yards per pass attempt, ranking it 15th overall in defensive efficiency. In such a competitive league, it’s tough to tell what aspects of its early season play are for real.

Clemson, however, has gotten off to a rough start this season, losing to both Duke and Florida State. In Week 4, Clemson outgained Florida State 429-311 and limited the Seminoles to just 22 yards on the ground. The Tigers allow only 2.7 yards per rush while ranking eighth in yards per play.
