Game Preview

The passing game is clicking, and even though the offense isn’t exactly funnin’ and gunnin’, it’s doing well. So far, Graham Mertz has been outstanding for the Gators, who have a 77% passing completion rate and a defense that has been effective on third down and against average passing teams.

The top-ranked pass defense in the SEC hasn’t let anyone, not even Tennessee, settle into a rhythm. Not even Utah was able to average more than 3.5 yards per carry on the ground against this stifling run defense. While Kentucky’s offense has been functioning normally, the best defense it has faced thus far has been… Vanderbilt? Akron?

The defense has been a rock against the run and has forced multiple giveaways in three of UK’s four games. UK hasn’t faced anyone you and ten buddies couldn’t beat, but the squad needed the time to replenish a bit, and the passing game under former NC State QB Devin Leary has been good enough.

The state of Kentucky. Despite defying all logic and reason, no one has gained 100 yards on the ground against them, and the pass rush should be plenty to get to Mertz.

It’s Florida versus Kentucky, and the Gators have dropped two in a row. For those of you on the blue side of things, it’s important to know that this “rivalry” has resulted in a lot of heartache and hardship. Florida went on a 33-year win streak that ended in 2017, during which time they went 3-for-5.

In 1948–1951, Kentucky went on a four-game losing streak against Florida in the series. To put it another way… Florida needs to play well in order to beat a UK squad that is both inexperienced and severely deficient, but Mark Stoops once again has a group that wins despite its lack of polish. The Gators’ offense will be adaptable, and the defense will shut down a suddenly strong UK run game, but it won’t be pretty.
