Game Preview

There was a lot of doubt and cynicism regarding the Buffaloes’ chances of success in their first season with Deion Sanders as head coach.

After the Buffs scored 45 points in an incredible upset of ranked TCU despite being 3-touchdown underdogs, those predictions were thrown out, at least for a week. Next up is this Saturday’s home opener against Nebraska in Week 2 action of college football.

In his debut game for Colorado, quarterback Shedeur Sanders threw for 510 yards and four touchdowns, a record for a Buffaloes quarterback, while two-way player Travis Hunter had an interception and 119 yards receiving, including two plays that came close to scoring. Dylan Edwards, a freshman running back, scored four touchdowns on the day, including the game-winning one on fourth down.

Matt Rhule, formerly of Temple and Baylor, took over as head coach at Nebraska this season. Despite a tight loss in his first game, the Huskers are hoping that Rhule will help them turn things around.

With less than two minutes remaining in the game, Rhule’s squad led Minnesota by a score of 10-3. However, the Gophers scored 10 unanswered points, including a field goal as time ran out.

Both Deion Sanders and Matt Rhule, who are in their first seasons as head coaches, have had wildly contrasting first games with Colorado and Nebraska, respectively. Colorado’s offense will be high-flying while Nebraska’s defense will be stout, but neither team has much of either.

There will be a noticeable contrast in playing styles, but one thing is certain: Colorado has more and better athletes. Despite having one of the lowest floors in football, the Buffaloes have one of the highest ceilings thanks to their historic transfer activity.

Deion Sanders’ home debut this Saturday against Matt Rhule and the Cornhuskers will be unrivaled, but the Buffaloes looked outstanding in Week 1.
