Game Preview

New Mexico State is hoping to get back to back winsand a statement road win against the New Mexico Lobos. Five of New Mexico State’s previous seven away games have ended in defeat.

Despite having to resign as head coach of Minnesota in the middle of the 2015 season due to health issues, Jerry Kill had success as an assistant coach, had a brief stint at TCU at the end of 2021, and led New Mexico State to a bowl game in his first season.

The Aggies’ appearance in the Quick Lane Bowl at the expense of Bowling Green was the result of an odd coincidence, but that’s beside the point. The season ended on a high note, with a bowl victory.

In the four years following the 2017 bowling transition, the program won only eight games. This was the only winning season for the program between 2003 and Kill’s arrival. With its transition from independent to Conference USA status, solid core of returning players, and favorable schedule, the program has a legitimate shot at achieving its first consecutive winning seasons since the 1960s.

Meanwhile, the New Mexico Lobos need two consecutive victories to improve their record. Four of New Mexico’s past six games at home have ended in defeat. Dylan Hopkins has thrown for 388 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions while completing 68.3 percent of his throws. D.J. Washington has 6 receptions, and Duece Jones and Luke Wysong have combined for 152 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns.

Jacory Croskey-Merritt has 212 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead their run offense, which is averaging 193.5 yards per game. New Mexico’s defense is giving up an average of 345.5 yards and 31 points per game. The New Mexico Lobos are led by Syaire Riley’s 11 tackles, followed by Kyler Drake’s 1 sack and Zach Morris’s 2 pass deflections.

It’s a rivalry game, and New Mexico is playing at home, where they’ve won five of the last seven. New Mexico’s offense has been more consistent as of late, which is bad news for a New Mexico State defense that ranks 100th in the country in terms of overall defense and 109th in terms of scoring defense. Through three games, the Aggies have yet to successfully exit the field of play.
