Colorado, led by head coach Deion Sanders, despite most predictions that Prime’s first season would not even result in a bowl game appearance, is currently 2-0 and could be the biggest story in American sports.
Colorado’s offense is led by historic playoff quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who is a 78 percent passer with 903 yards and six touchdown passes as the Buffaloes prepare for a Week 3 matchup with in-state rival Colorado State.
With 903 passing yards through two games, Shedeur Sanders’ chances of winning the Heisman Trophy increased dramatically. Travis Hunter, a two-way star, emerges as a compelling Heisman candidate due to his extensive playing time. The receiving corps was topped in Week 2 by USF transfers Jimmy Horn and Xavier Weaver, with Weaver recording 170 yards through the air.
The loss against Washington State (50-24) dropped the Rams to 0-1 on the season, but it was their finest offensive performance in almost a year; Colorado State failed to score 20 points in a single game all of last season, prompting a massive squad rebuild that included a new starting offensive line.
Colorado State was a popular preseason dark horse favorite to win the Mountain West, thus anticipation was high for the upcoming season. However, Washington State lost by 50 points to Colorado State in Week 1, leading to the benching of quarterback Clay Millen. Instead, Brayden Fowler-Nicolasi, who sparked Colorado State to 21 fourth-quarter points, will start for the Rams on Saturday. While Nicolosi had the Rams offense rolling, he also threw three passes that could have easily been intercepted out of twenty attempts.
The Rams’ offensive performance appeared to be similar to their previous season’s. This week, they’ll pay the price once again for their lackluster performance. All-conference receiver Tory Horton was the lone consistent performer for CSU’s offense. It’s likely that Hunter will be shadowing Horton this week, so Ross-Simmons and the rest of the receiving group will need to significantly up their output.
