Game Preview

Navy and Notre Dame engage in one of the most intriguing college football rivalries each year when they square off against each other, taking place outside their campuses at large stadiums such as FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland or M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. Since World War II ended, Notre Dame has dominated this series by winning 43 out of 52 matches between them.

It may be said that Marcus Freeman’s first year as the head football coach at Notre Dame was a triumph. The Irish were ranked 18th in the final AP Top 25 after finishing the season 9-4 and defeating South Carolina in the Gator Bowl. Given that Sam Hartman has been added by Freeman to assist address the quarterback inconsistencies, Notre Dame will probably approach the 2023 campaign with greater aspirations. The Irish are expected to be more offensively threatening without Tommy Rees, and the defense should also get better.

It might seem strange to see Ken Niumatalolo cease monitoring from the sidelines for Navy, and Brian Newberry will get a chance to defeat Notre Dame in Ireland.

Navy’s option attack isn’t entirely absent, but there are more elements being introduced. Grant Chesnut, a Kennesaw State graduate, is brought in order to take over as offensive coordinator and introduce a few changes to the process. There is bound to be more passing involved, the running game is going to use various formations, and the possibility is still available when necessary.

PJ Volker switches from managing the linebackers to take on the defensive coordinator position as Newberry advances to the position of head coach. The Midshipmen finished 2nd in sacks, 2nd in the nation at preventing the run, and first in the AAC at halting 3rd downs. Put the majority of the blame for the 4-8 season from the previous season on the team’s offensive side.

Navy defense will likely play a pivotal role against Notre Dame. Their strong run defense should allow them to bleed off possessions quickly while holding back the Irish offense. Unfortunately, though, talented wide receiver groups may pose issues.
