West Virginia Mountaineers and Penn State Nittany Lions will meet for an early season showdown on September 2. Longtime Penn State supporters are anticipating the resumption of one of the school’s historic regional rivals for the very first occasion since Penn State entered the Big Ten. In the opening game of the 2023 season, Penn State and West Virginia will play each other in Beaver Stadium for the first time since 1992, when Penn State’s independent football program came to a conclusion.
West Virginia endured a difficult 2022, to put it mildly. The year began with two defeats, one to Pitt, a longtime foe, and the other to Kansas in overtime. After everything was over, the Mountaineers had a 5-7 overall record and a 3-6 conference record, which was sufficient to allow them to watch the bowl season from home. Despite the poor campaign, WVU decided to rehire Neal Brown as head coach for 2023.
With 14 of its starters coming back and a few young players like Drew Allar, Nicholas Singleton, and Kaytron Allen at running back, Penn State is well-positioned to challenge Michigan and Ohio State for first place in the Big Ten this season. Although the Nittany Lions’ receiving group needs to be replenished, the offense was helped when left tackle Olu Fashanu decided to play in 2023 rather than declare for the NFL Draft. Last year, Penn State’s defense was considered one of the strongest in the Big Ten. As long as cornerbacks and tackles can be replaced, this group should continue to lead the conference this coming campaign.
Penn State will have an opportunity to show their mettle in this game, but they must stay focused and avoid making mistakes. Drew Allar should shine as their offense will be put through its paces.
