Nebraska Cornhuskers and Minnesota Golden Gophers will face on Thursday August 31st at Huntington Bank Stadium.
We are now firmly in the Matt Rhule era of Nebraska football. The fan base is anxious for a change of direction because the Scott Frost period was a catastrophic disaster. The beginning of the Matt Rhule era will be marked with a challenging conference matchup versus Big Ten West challenger Minnesota at the end of August. Tanner Morgan and Mo Ibrahim are not anymore on the Gophers’ roster, yet this shouldn’t prevent them from punishing the Cornhuskers, who are undergoing a significant rebuild.
The offense is expected to be strengthened by a few transfers, notably former Georgia Tech quarterback Jeff Sims. Additionally, Tony White, the new defensive coordinator, might have a strong linebacker unit and secondary.
When Casey Thompson comes to the field to face off against Jeff Sims, a transfer from Georgia Tech, Nebraska should most likely put up a fight. This game simply won’t feature enough reliable offensive play as Minnesota’s defense shines to secure the victory.
Even though Athan Kaliakmanis capitalized late in the campaign and threw for 319 yards in the victory over Wisconsin, it’s requesting a great deal for him to take on the efficiency of Mohamed Ibrahim and the expertise of QB Tanner Morgan. Western Michigan transfer running back Sean Tyler is a significant producer who’ll offer a great deal of flash to the ground threat.
Under PJ Fleck, identifying components and producing for the offensive line hasn’t proven to be an issue, but missing the New York Giants’ new starting center doesn’t help matters. The biggest gap to be filled is John Michael Schmitz, although G Quinn Carroll and OT Aireontae Ersery both possess all-Big Ten quality.
The Minnesota defense is yet again experiencing a peculiar combination of events. It ranked 9th nationally in overall defense and 4th in scoring defense, were among the top in the Big Ten at stopping 3rd downs, and achieved all of this without applying any pass rush or pressure at all.
