BYU vs Oregon: Predictions & Analysis 9/17/2022

Game Preview

Game Preview

Coming off last week’s double-overtime victory over Baylor, BYU looks to upset another ranked opponent when it visits Oregon on Saturday. The Ducks have won 20 straight games at Autzen Stadium, meaning they are a much tougher team to play at their home, which is widely known as one of the loudest places in college football.

After lighting up USF for 50 points in its season opener, BYU found points a lot harder to come by last week against Baylor. The Cougars gained just 366 total yards and 24 first downs but still managed to pull out a 26-20 double-overtime victory over the Bears.

A big reason for BYU’s offensive struggles was the fact that the Cougars were playing without their top two receivers, junior Puka Nacua and senior Gunner Romney. Nacua sprained his ankle in the victory over USF, while Romney has missed BYU’s first two games with an undisclosed injury.

Without those weapons in the offense, BYU was more reliant on the running game, handing it off 33 times for just 83 yards. The Cougars also got a bit creative, dialing up a 22-yard TD pass from receiver Chase Roberts to quarterback Jaren Hall.

The Ducks badly needed a confidence boost after a season-opening 49-3 loss to Georgia, and they got it last week against Eastern Washington. Oregon was dominant on both sides of the ball, building a 56-7 lead midway through the third quarter before cruising the rest of the way to a 70-14 rout.

A week after throwing for just 173 yards and being intercepted twice in his Oregon debut, Bo Nix completed his first 10 passes and tossed a career-high five touchdown strikes in less than three quarters of action. Seven different players scored TDs for the Ducks while the defense held EWU to 87 passing yards, the first time Oregon has allowed less than 100 yards through the air in nearly five years.
