On September 1, 2023, the University of Massachusetts Minutemen and the New Mexico State Aggies will engage in a match at Aggie Memorial Stadium in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
The 2022 season was a long one for UMass, as they went winless for the final nine games after their Week 3 20-3 victory against Stony Brook. The Minutemen’s road game against New Mexico State, another independent institution, could be closer than it looks on paper, giving them an early opportunity to avenge their dismal season from a year ago.
UMass, led by head coach Don Brown and his various pro-style offensive plans, averaged just 12.5 points per game, good for 131st in the nation. The defense for the Minutemen allowed moreover 31 points per game, placing them in the bottom 100 of FBS teams. UMass’s terrible 2022 campaign hardly requires any further explanation.
UMass played one of its best games of 2022 against New Mexico State, as the Minutemen held the Aggies to under 25 points on offense for just the fourth time all season. Before making a comeback in the final six minutes of the first half, New Mexico State trailed 10-0.
Reggie Akles, a junior transfer wide receiver, joins Pavia and the rest of the wide receiver corps in Jerry Kill’s spread option scheme. Former Georgia Tech and Clemson quarterback Taisun Phommachanh, a redshirt junior transfer, has replaced Brady Olson as UMass’ starting quarterback this season.
UMass running back Kay’Ron Adams, who returned as the RB1 inside a redesigned scheme that included two additional receivers with Phommachanh in the backfield, scored on a 66-yard touchdown run last year, but the game ended with five field goals and three touchdowns.
The Minutemen are currently huge underdogs on the road, especially considering that they kept the same coaching staff despite last year’s 1-11 record. In contrast, New Mexico State started the 2022 season 0-4 before winning five of their final six games en route to a Quick Lane Bowl victory over Bowling Green (24-19).
