Saturday’s NCAA football game at War Memorial Stadium features the Appalachian State Mountaineers and the Wyoming Cowboys. Appalachian State just played East Carolina. The Mountaineers won by 15 points and improved to 2-1 on the season. Wyoming’s third game of the season was against Texas. The Cowboys were defeated by a score of 21.
On September 2, the Mountaineers played Gardner-Webb in the season opener. Appalachian State scored in each quarter en route to a 45-24 victory. They compiled 394 total yards (244 passing). The second game, against North Carolina, was more challenging.
The Mountaineers gave a valiant effort, but they ultimately lost 40-34 in double overtime. The Mountaineers outscored East Carolina by a margin of 20 points in the third quarter, ultimately winning the game 43-28. Joey Aguilar had three touchdown passes and an interception for a total of 241 yards. On 26 attempts, Nate Noel gained 178 yards and a touchdown. Kaedin Robinson led the receivers with four receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown.
The current Mountaineers team is capable of competing at a high level against any opponent. They took a very strong North Carolina club to the very end in game two. The Mountaineers started slowly but eventually produced 465 total yards (224 rushing) and a really impressive win last weekend against East Carolina, despite having an easier opponent on paper.
The Cowboys’ first game of the season was a close one; they beat Texas Tech 35-33 after extra time. Wyoming’s offensive performance was average (320 total yards, 149 passing) but good enough to secure the victory. The Cowboys’ second game against Portland State went more smoothly, as they won by a score of 31-17.
Wyoming’s improved offense produced 371 yards (201 passing) but still committed two turnovers. Wyoming suffered their first defeat of the year last weekend when they played Texas and lost by a score of 31-10. After a good first half, the Cowboys were blown out 21-0 in the fourth quarter. Despite throwing an interception, quarterback Evan Svoboda threw for 136 yards, and running back Harrison Waylee rushed 18 times for 110 yards and a touchdown.
