The Holiday Bowl pits the USC Trojans (7-5) against the Louisville Cardinals (10-3). The bowl game takes place at Petco Park on December 27.
Caleb Williams, the quarterback for USC, is taking a day off and skipping this game. Williams’ predicted position as the first pick in the draft makes his absence understandable. The Trojans concluded the regular season at 7-5, a significant decline from the 2022 campaign when USC finished 11-3 and Williams received the Heisman Trophy. He completed 30 touchdown passes with 3,633 yards via the air. The starting quarterback will be third-year sophomore Miller Moss and in his brief appearance this season, Moss has thrown 23 of 32 passes for 309 yards and 1 touchdown. Top rusher MarShawn Lloyd and No. 2 receiver Brenden Rice have also entered the draft. Together, Lloyd and Rice scored 21 touchdowns. Moss will set off a USC offensive that is severely lacking in potency. In the year’s final game, the USC defense gave up 38 points, 24 of which came in the 2nd half on 354 total yards of offense, demonstrating their persistent struggles.
After losing by 10 points to Florida State in the ACC title, Louisville concluded the regular season with 10 victories after thirteen games played, then went on a two-game losing streak. This season, the Cardinals’ offense held their own, averaging almost 31 points on over 400 yards of total offense, including 227 via the air. Quarterback Jack Plummer, who completed 235 passes for 3,063 yards and 21 touchdowns, was outstanding for Louisville the whole season. With 1,128 yards and 13 touchdowns on 181 carries, Jawhar Jordan established himself as one of the nation’s best ball runners, and Isaac Guerendo added 649 yards and 8 scores this year. Jamari Tharash, who had 63 receptions for 858 yards and 6 touchdowns, topped the club.
