Predictions & Preview: PopTarts Bowl: NC State vs Kansas State 12-28-2023

Game Preview

On December 28, the inaugural Pop-Tarts Bowl will take place at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida, between the Kansas State Wildcats and the North Carolina State Wolfpack.

Now that they have won 5 consecutive matches to improve to 9-3, NC State is among the hottest NCAAF teams in the nation. The Wolfpack’s ACC victories over North Carolina and Clemson serve as highlights of their record. Since then, a number of athletes have accessed the transfer portal, but none particularly noteworthy. Quarterback MJ Morris, who declared for Maryland last week, is the most significant departure. This season, Morris finished 3-1 as a starter for the Wolfpack, who defeated Clemson 24-17 thanks to passes of 138 yards and a pair of touchdowns. But he hasn’t performed since November 4. In his absence, it is anticipated that Brennan Armstrong, a transfer from Virginia, who has passed for 1,621 yards and 11 touchdowns, will earn another start. Payton Wilson, an All-American linebacker, has been linked to choosing to sit out in order to protect his health, but he appears to be determined to participate.

Not as lucky for Kansas State is the team’s ability to maintain its roster. Several players for the Wildcats are out, notably quarterback Will Howard, who plans to transfer. Howard was one of the most effective quarterbacks in the Big 12, completing passes for 2,643 yards and 24 touchdowns against just 10 interceptions. The Wildcats intend to use freshman Avery Johnson, who played in 7 matches this NCAAF season, in his place. Johnson has performed admirably despite playing little. Over the course of 7 NCAAF games, he has attempted 35 passes, completing 23 of those for 301 yards and 3 scores. They face significant challenges ahead, especially with the departure of offensive coordinator Collin Klein. The Kansas State Wildcats are also lacking a couple important defensive players due to injuries in their roster, specifically to linebacker Jake Clifton and defensive tackle Uso Seumalo.
