Florida and Utah don’t usually meet, but this game has all the makings of an exciting classic. As week one kicks off the college football season in an electrifying fashion, and Utah won the Pac-12 title last season adding even greater intrigue.
Kyle Whittingham has built his Utes into an experienced, disciplined squad that brings their signature brand of disciplined play to The Swamp. Billy Napier is coaching his Gators team for just the second year; many play-callers will make their debuts here as Florida brings its wealth of talent. But how Florida utilizes that talent could prove crucial.
Cam Rising, the main quarterback for Utah who has led the Utes to consecutive conference championships, will be returning in the lineup. After starter quarterback Anthony Richardson announced for the NFL draft in December, Florida will begin the contest with another quarterback, most probably between Graham Mertz or Jack Miller. Richardson was named SEC offensive player of the week after scoring 3 touchdowns on the ground in the victory over Utah.
Utah’s defense could play an integral role in this matchup as well. They’re one of the top-25 units, featuring several returning starters. Florida will need to adapt their schemes accordingly in order to counter Utah’s talented players.
Florida and Utah will play the first match in Salt Lake City between them, and this is going to be the second match in a two-game series among the schools. Florida overcame Utah 29-26 to start the 2022 season last September at The Swamp; the match was settled by linebacker Amari Burney’s last-second interception in the end zone.
Note, though, that both teams have proven they can achieve when needed – Utah being capable of winning close games while Florida being capable of producing big upsets at times. Many fans have looked forward to this matchup since its initial announcement back in 2022 and Florida hopes this game provides them with an opportunity to start the season against an opponent with title aspirations.
