Game Preview

For the first time in quite some time, the Boilermakers will field an all new squad. Former Illinois Defensive Coordinator Ryan Walters has been hired as Purdue’s new head coach. The previous time Purdue hired a Defensive Coordinator as Head Coach was in 1982, making this hire notable for the Boilermakers.

Even though former starting quarterback Jake Haener is now playing for the New Orleans Saints, this year’s offense should be able to go out to a fast start thanks to the ground game.

The Bulldogs have a strong group of backs with potential and one of the top offensive lines in the Mountain West. Keep at it, take charge, and your fantastic defense will take care of the rest.

The pass rush must produce, but the back seven has enough experience to stave off a Purdue offense that is expected to regress at least initially under the new coaching staff. Without a week off until their game against Northwestern in mid-November, the Boilermakers cannot afford to have a shaky defensive front.

Ryan Walters, the team’s new head coach, learned from the best in the business while working under Bret Bielema at Illinois. It’s a tall order to replicate the Illini’s takeaway dominance overnight, but the new coaching staff is excellent at imparting the knowledge necessary to succeed.

The offense for Fresno State might use a few tune-up games. While the running game will be effective, it will face off against a large and potentially formidable Purdue defensive front. Key receivers have graduated, and while QB Mikey Keene from UCF is solid, he is no Haener.

Walters has to make a strong impression. He’s got a good new quarterback in Texas’ Hudson Card, some seasoned blockers, and a running game that should be slightly more effective than Fresno State’s. The Bulldogs are still a formidable contender to win the Mountain West even without Haener.
