Game Preview

On Saturday, the Texas Tech Red Raiders travel to BYU in a game that is all but a must-win. The Red Raiders are currently 3-4. Losing is not an option for Texas Tech because it still has home games over TCU and Kansas as well as away games versus Texas and Kansas. BYU is no pushover. Although they still have games against Texas and Oklahoma, the Cougars remain 4-2 overall.

Last week against Kansas State, the rookie quarterback Behren Morton was hurt early on and never fully recovered. He is currently a game-time choice. Tech will resort to third-string freshman QB Jake Strong, who threw 3 passes that were intercepted in the 2nd half versus Kansas State, if he is unable to play. This offense has to come up with a way to deliver the ball to Tahj Brooks on Saturday regardless of who plays.

In the game against the Wildcats, Jake Strong led the Raiders with 173 yards on 16 of 28 passes, one touchdown, as well as 3 interceptions. Additionally, he ran the ball 54 yards on one carry. Tahj Brooks accumulated 98 running yards on 17 carries for an average of 5.8 yards per carry and one rushing score. He also added 2 receptions for 22 yards. In the game, Coy Eakin had 5 receptions for 102 yards, averaging 20.4 yards per catch.

Fans will be wondering if BYU can recover from its loss to TCU. The Horned Frogs humiliated the Cougars this past weekend, defeating them 44–11. The defense was helpless against TCU’s backup quarterback, and the offense was terrible. This game will define how this squad’s campaign progresses moving forward because if they don’t react, the second half of their campaign will be a tough one.

In the Cougs’ game versus the Horned Frogs, Kedon Slovis completed 15 of 34 passes for 152 yards, no touchdowns, along with an interception. LJ Martin amassed a 14-carry, 56-yard performance, adding 4 receptions for an additional 19 yards. 3 passes were caught by Chase Roberts for a total of 63 yards, as well as averaging 21.0 yards per grab.
