In the 2023 season kickoff versus the Indiana Hoosiers, the Ohio State Buckeyes will be laying their 27-game streak of victories on at stake.
Despite losing quarterback C.J. Stroud to the NFL, coach Ryan Day’s Buckeyes remain projected to prevail in the Big Ten. Instead, this team will merely reload with Kyle McCord or Devin Brown at the quarterback position, particularly given that the winner of this contest is going to be able to pass to the greatest receiving group in the country and be assisted by a stacked group of running backs. The offensive line is still a worry heading into the fall after being a work in development throughout the spring. Under Jim Knowles, the defense should improve in his second season as coordinator.
For the inaugural time since 2011, the Buckeyes finished their campaign with back-to-back defeats. The defense needs to regain its pass-rush mentality and produce more decisive plays if the Buckeyes are to compete again. Most organizations would rule out a team with a new quarterback and concerns regarding the offensive line, yet there remains an abundance of skill on this team.
Indiana’s football program continues to be on the decline since going 14-7 from 2019–20. In the previous two seasons, the Hoosiers have a 6-18 record with 2 Big Ten victories. Coach Tom Allen’s goal for the 2023 college football campaign is to get on the right track, and a few transfer acquisitions via the portal have improved the group’s depth and talent quality. However, only 7 starters have returned. To have a chance at 6 victories, Allen needs Tennessee transfer Tayven Jackson to play quarterback well.
For IU, 2022 was a slight but insufficient progress over 2021. The Hoosiers had a lot to do in every area heading into the offseason due to worries about depth and effect. Allen needs to identify his starting quarterback first. Then Bell will have the responsibility of making sure that his offense gets the most of the playmakers it already has, like Lucas, Camper, and Donaven McCulley, as well as creating fresh talents.
