In last week’s 47-3 victory over Louisiana Monroe, Jimbo Fisher’s Texas A&M Aggies vented some of the pent-up anger around College Station. After a heartbreaking loss to Miami in Week 2, A&M is presently 2-1.
Now prepared to play in the Southeastern Conference, the Aggies will host Auburn at Kyle Field this coming Saturday. Hugh Freeze is off to a successful start with the Auburn Tigers, as his team now sits at 3-0. This will be Freeze’s first serious challenge since returning to the SEC.
As an underdog, forcing turnovers is crucial, and Jaylin Simpson has shown a keen eye for the ball this year. Through three games, he has three interceptions, one in each game. Connor Weigman needs to be aware of what’s going on with No. 36 at all times.
The Aggies have plenty of talent at wide receiver, but Noah Thomas is scoring all of their touchdowns. Thomas has only had 10 receptions this season, but he has contributed to four of their 10 receiving touchdowns. In the goal area, look out for the 6-foot-6 sophomore. He’s the big guy that always wears #3.
Payton Thorne has guided Auburn to impressive offensive showings against weaker opponents, but the Tigers could muster only 14 points in a Week 2 triumph over Cal. Thorne completed just 9 of 14 passes for 94 yards that game.
In an extremely sluggish game, Auburn was only able to gain 230 yards. In terms of plays per game, Auburn ranks 110th. Even though the over is 7-3 in Auburn’s last 10 games, that scares me into passing on a bet.
Auburn hasn’t faced anyone particularly formidable under Hugh Freeze, yet their one decent opponent nearly beat them. While A&M has dominated weaker opponents, they were blown out by Miami. There haven’t been many bright spots for A&M since Jimbo Fisher took charge in 2018, but the Aggies are 17-11 against the spread as home favorites.
