Clemson and Florida State’s encounter in Death Valley on September 23 had the makings of a matchup that would define the national title race before the season even began. The game still has some significance for the ACC and the playoff picture, but it isn’t as exciting as it once was.
Clemson hasn’t played like a team with championship aspirations since its opening weekend loss to Duke (28-7). Despite Saturday’s scare against Boston College, an unbeaten Florida State team is the favorite to win.
Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis was injured in the Seminoles’ narrow escape at Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, and his status is the game’s biggest topic. It looked like Travis hurt his throwing shoulder, but he stayed in the game because his team needed him.
Florida State appeared to be in control of the game in the third quarter, leading by 31 points over the Eagles despite falling down early.
But the Eagles fought and fought, and at the end of the game they were only behind 31-29. In the fourth quarter, Boston College outscored Florida State 13-0 and came within two points of tying the game. The Eagles tried their best, but the Seminoles’ defense was too strong.
Clemson, on the other hand, has won two straight games after opening the season with a loss to Duke in Durham. They defeated Charleston Southern and Florida Atlantic. On Saturday, the Tigers’ offense hummed along, leading to a 48-14 victory over the Owls.
The ground game gained over 100 yards and averaged over 5 yards per carry. Three different players had at least 35 yards rushing for the team. The passing game was also effective, with quarterback Cade Klubnik completing 16 of 27 passes for 169 yards and three touchdowns. He was successful in passing to eight different targets.
Even while casual fans might pick Florida State to win, recent history really favors Clemson. Clemson has won the last seven meetings between the two teams and has not lost to Florida State since 2014, when the Seminoles were headed by Jameis Winston and defending national champions.
