On Friday night in San Diego, Boise State and San Diego State will kick off Mountain West action. The Broncos have gotten off to a rough start this season, going just 1-2 after advancing to the Mountain West Championship Game.
However, a road victory over a mediocre San Diego State offense would alleviate some of the team’s early season worries. The oddsmakers are confident in the Broncos’ ability to make a fast start in the conference, but that doesn’t mean it will happen.
After taking over as starter in the middle of the 2022 season, Taylen Green struggled in 2023, throwing more interceptions than touchdowns. Since San Diego State is below the top 100 in rush defense efficiency, Green, a dual-threat quarterback, will aim to use his legs to open up the passing game.
A midseason replacement for Green in 2022, Jalen Mayden showed flashes of brilliance but is yet to take the next step in 2023. There are more picks than touchdown passes in his stat line, and he’s only averaging approximately five yards per play.
The Broncos have been able to run the ball well despite the absence of starting running back George Holani at quarterback for the past two games. Boise State is 10th in EPA/Rush this season, thus I anticipate that they will mostly employ the rushing assault against a San Diego State run defense that ranks fourth-worst in the country.
Boise State can overwhelm San Diego State with a ground attack and continuous chain play because the Aztecs have no answer. The club is 127th in the nation in terms of average yards per play (less than five) and is 107th in terms of allowed tackles for loss (29).
Although the Broncos’ defense took a beating in the season opener against Washington, it’s possible we’ll see an uptick in performance as Denver faces off against less formidable Mountain West opponents.
