In Week 3 of college football, the Minnesota Golden Gophers will take on the University of North Carolina Tar Heels in a late afternoon inter conference game. In Week 2, the Tar Heels, led by quarterback and potential first overall pick in the NFL Draft Drake Maye and renowned head coach Mack Brown, barely escaped an upset bid from Appalachian State in double overtime.
Minnesota, meanwhile, is 2-0 at home after beating Eastern Michigan 25-6 in Week 2 after opening with a walk-off field goal victory against Nebraska in Week 1. Minnesota, now in their eighth year under head coach P.J. Fleck, appears to have a strong defense to compensate for its lackluster offense.
In Week 1, Maye and the Tar Heels faced up against Spencer Rattler and the South Carolina Gamecocks in a huge rivalry game on a neutral field, and UNC wasted little time scoring scores on offense. In a decisive 31-17 victory, the Tar Heel defense stifled South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer’s high-octane passing assault led by Rattler.
Although both teams have not faced one other in recent history, you can still expect a close game because they are both unbeaten and looking to improve to 3-0 before settling into conference play.
Without transfer wideout Tez Walker, the Tar Heels’ formidable attack would be much weaker. However, the NCAA board has ruled that Walker does not meet eligibility requirements to play this season. Walker’s absence won’t cripple what is still a potent attack, but his presence might be the difference between a run to the College Football Playoff and another season like 2022 for UNC.
Athan Kaliakmanis, a first-year player with the Vikings, is starting at quarterback. The Golden Gophers won their Week 2 home game despite the fact that the 6-4, 205-pound redshirt sophomore completed just 10-15 passes for 117 yards and an interception. Since they were playing a MAC school, the players on UNC’s defense were different. You can count on Darius Taylor and Sean Tyler, the Golden Gophers’ running backs, to carry the offensive load.
