After a nice tune-up at home against Indiana State it is time for Purdue to go out on the road for the first time this year. The Syracuse Orange will play host to the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday. Purdue and Syracuse have played just once before, a 51-0 home win for the Boilermakers in 2004. Syracuse is 2-0 after beating Connecticut 48-14 to easily cover as a favorite. The Orange opened the season as the underdogs at home but upset Louisville 31-7.
Purdue is 1-1 coming off of a 56-0 win over Division I Football Championship Subdivision team Indiana State. Purdue led 35-0 at halftime and easily covered as a 37-point home favorite. The Boilermakers lost the season opener at home against Penn State, 35-31. They trailed 21-10 at half but led 31-28 midway through the fourth quarter. A touchdown with less than a minute to go allowed Penn State to win as favorites.
Quarterback Aidan O’Connell has thrown for 567 yards and five touchdowns with a completion percentage of 59.7 and no interceptions. Charlie Jones has been O’Connell’s top target with 21 catches for 286 yards and four scores. Devin Mockobee is the leading rusher with 78 yards and a touchdown. King Doerue has rushed for 64 yards and three touchdowns.
On the other side, Syracuse’s offense has averaged 457 yards a game, ranking 47th nationally. The Orange defense ranks 25th in yards allowed per game with 268. Purdue is averaging 473.5 yards total offense a contest to rank 35th, while the defense is ranked 28th after giving up an average of 275.5 yards over the first two games.
Quarterback Garrett Shrader leads Syracuse, completing 79.2% of his passes for 524 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions. Shrader has also run the ball 29 times for 119 yards and three touchdowns. Sean Tucker is the leading rusher and receiver with 312 total yards, 210 rushing and 102 receiving. Tucker has two rushing touchdowns and one receiving.
