The USC Trojans have the possibility of making history for their squad on Friday. The Trojans have never played in the college football playoff stage. However after bringing Lincoln Riley from OKC, USC has been one of the best squads in the entire nation for 2022. Riley decided to focus his efforts mainly on a likely Heisman trophy winner in Caleb Williams, to hopefully continue to push the team to greatness.
The Trojans have a single loss this season, interestingly that loss came against Utah earlier in the season, thus USC is looking for revenge going into this bout. The game itself was pretty close, with Utah barely coming out on top against USC 43-42. The Trojans offense performed very well, however, the defense was not able to take the chances and get stops going. Cameron Rising of Utah threw for a total of 415 yards including 2 touchdowns in that matchup.
Looking at the last couple of games, USC was able to upset both UCLA and Notre Dame, but both games were close in similar fashion to Utah’s. Meanwhile, when Utah battled against top tier teams in November was against Oregon, where they lost 20-17 in a low scoring affair.
In this matchup, USC won’t have key piece Travis Dye at the running back position. However, Austin Jones has seemingly stepped up to the situation in his place. He recently rushed for 154 yards with 25 attempts against Notre Dame, showing some speed and momentum with the football in his hands. The Trojans will most likely look to dominate offensively in this game, and win through sheer points instead of stops. Not that the defense is bad or anything, especially if they come with the same energy they did against Notre Dame. However it is their one weakness that Utah might be able to exploit if they woke up in the wrong side of the bed.
